79-93 are all Fox Body's. Is that not what your looking for? 94+ is when body and chassis changed, they are called SN95's, or FOX 4's. 79-95 have 5.0L pushrod motors. 96+ have 4.6L SOHC modular motors. 96+ Cobra's have 4.6L DOHC moudular motors.
Personally I love 89's. Reasons being.....
-First year for mass air, (allows making mods easier).
-First year for 140 mph Speedo with old instrument cluster
-tilt wheel
-Last year without airbags
88-92's were rated at 225 HP and 300 ft/lbs of torque. In 93 the rating dropped to 205 HP and 275 ft/lbs of torque. HP levels for 94 through 97 remained at 215 HP. In 98 HP levels went back up to 225 HP, then up again, to 260 HP in 99.
Cobra's are now a different story.
The basic Cobra started in 93 by Ford SVT in search of more performance out of a factory car. HP ratings for the 93 are 235 HP for the Cobra and Cobra R models. 94 and 95 Cobra's have 240 HP. In 96 HP levels jumped to 305 HP and remained 305 HP until 99 when levels again went up, to 320 HP (which was over rated). No Cobra was produced in 2000, except for the rare R model which made 385 HP, (but good luck finding or affording one of them).
There's a run through of the 90's, and a brief history for you. Since you didn't specify exactly what you were looking for I didn't go into depth too much. If your looking for performance then the above ratings might help you make a choice. Hope this helps some, and feel free to ask anymore questions!

One more thing, between a 95 GT and a 96 GT, you might feel that the 96 is a bit lagging in the balls department. That's because of the 4.6 SOHC motor. If you're going to get a cammer motor, get a 99+ 4.6 SOHC or 96 DOHC Cobra. If not, then get a 94-95 GT and spray the piss out of it.

What ever you do man do not get a 94-95(low Horse power rating) only 195- 205 horse power at the rear wheels, very weak. the 94-96 cobras are also under powerd at about 215- 225 RWHP. 96-97 mustang gt's have about 195-205 RWHP. the 96 cobra is rated at 240 HP so do the math. your lookin at about 225 RWHP at the most for a 96. A 97 and 98 on the other hand jumps up to 305 rated pony's and somewhere around 240-260 RWHP. The 99 Cobra is the one you want if you can aford it. You wanna impress your friend who said all mustangs suck get the 99 cobra with 275-285 RWHP. you will have the looks and glory. although your looking at about 17,000 G's on up its the best Cobra before 2000 generation cobras which is a little ove mid but a true ass kicker.
PS. How much Scrilla scratch you got on your new mustang??

A couple problems here. You are saying the 96 cobra was rated at 240, that is incorrect it is rated a 305 as well as following models up to 98. These usually put out 265 or so at the wheels. ITs the 94/95 cobras that are rated at 240 hp, But, I have seen bone stock ones with nothing but 14 deg timing put out 225hp at the wheels. Its a common consensus that they make a bit more at the flywheel then ford rated them at, Guess they had to make the upcoming modular generation look better.

If I was going Fox body and had the budget? 93 Cobra. Otherwise, the 91-92 MAF cars due to the upgraded wheels/bigger inner fenderwell or the 87-88 Speed Density cars because they're faster than the MAF cars, and respond better to modification than most think.
Going SN95 94-95 GT or 96-98 Cobra.
The 1993 Cobra is rated at 235hp, but will put down about 220-225rwhp, stock. It's a better bet than the 94-95 Cobra for performance because of the lighter weight, easier to mod EEC-IV ignition and computer system, and it already has a 65mm T/B. Dump the crappy Cobra computer, get a decent cam in there, headers, and off road H pipe, catback, and you're easily at 260rwhp+.
