I understand there are two temperature sensors on a 89 cavalier. Its got the v6 in it. Can anyone tell me the location of where they are? I need to test them with a meter and see if they are functioning properly. When the car heats up it idles bad and soon dies. It only stays running if you give it gas and I don't think its the fuel regulator.

Circle with D, should be the coolant temp sensor, usually in the thermostat housing. N4 & N5 for the dash, gage and lite, backside of engine.

Can a failing coolant sensor cause the engine to act up when it warms up?

I can't be sure that is your problem, but, yes, a faulty cts can cause problems.
