check engine soon light

The check engine soon light came on in my 2003 S-10 4 cylinder. Took it to Autozone to see if they could diagnose it with their meter. The meter came up totally blank. What could cause this?

Check all fuses.
NO scanner read out is usually blown fuse or no power to diagnostic test port.
Like battery power onpin 16.
