Amp Problems!!!!!!!!!!

I have never hooked up an amp before. I have a cheap Thump! 250 watt amp. trying to install in my 97 Grand Am GT. Alot of the wiring was previously installed from the previous owner. The 8 gauge power line was already installed, and the rem wire was already hooked up to the back of the stereo. My amp only has the audio in jacks, so I had to buy a low voltage convertor to enable my amp to be hooked up to the stereo through audio jacks. I connected the low voltage convertor to my speaker wires on the back of the stereo, but I still do not get anything. The damn power light doesn't even light up. I know it has a good ground and a god connection with the battery. Should the power light come on even if it's not receiving a signal from the stereo?

what makes the power light come on ......
1) +12V to the main power input
2) Gnd to the main power supply
3) the auto turn-on wire

when 1 and 2 are hooked up correctly, the auto turn-on acts like a switch. It turns on the amp when the headunit is turned on.

Either the +12V fuse is blown or the auto turn-on wire is not working correctly. to see if is working correctly, just use a small peice of wire to jumper the +12V to the auto turn-on teminal or wire. VERY IMPORTANT ..... disconnect the auto turn-on wire you already have run first - if you don't, you will be pushing 12V up a line that should be supplying it.
