ok so we tried to install a new cam we decided not to but thats besides the point so now the belt is loose, so we start by having it a TDC then following what chilton says we turned crankshaft 1/4 turn didnt tension the belt anymore than it was than it says retighten the adjusting bolt and thats already tight...l...what are we doing wrong someone tell me how to tighten a timing belt!!

you took the t. belt off just the cam pulley? if so all you should have to do line the cam back up on tdc and slide the belt back on turn it 720 degrees counter clockwise to check it...

i forget which was the tensioner move put, when i put my timing belt on, i pulled or pushed on the tensioner to get right of the slack in the timing belt. i used all my force, then i had my bro tighten it. got rid of the slack and yeah

with the tensioner loose (the 14 mm bolt) turn the crank counter clockwise until the slack is taken up then tighten the 14 mm. if you cant get the slack out look at the tensioner if its at the end of its travel and the belt is still to loose then you may have the wrong belt, but I am assuming you still have the same belt if all you did was change the cam.

Plus workin when ur pissed off and tired is really just a waste of time. I remember me and my friend rob were puttin on my struts and coilovers on my car, its took 9 hrs!!! And we were straight through. By the time we were puttin the rear back together (3 am) it took us 45 min just to get one of the bolt holes to line up, its sucked so much ass i think i got hepatitus or some shit :D . But yeah, tomorrow you'll feel much better.

PS The reason it took 9 hrs was because we were tryin to figure out how to get the stock spring off the stock strut so we could use the parts on em, but we didnt have a spring compressor. We ended up having to dremel each one, lol...ah the ghetto fabulous life style, aint it a bitch.

PPS Hope i didnt offend anyone with my heatitus joke, i know its no laughin matter, but they oppurtunity was just sooo there.

speaking of hepatitus, my name refers to the standard model. However,
I know this post is about the timing belt but for those who wanna know.
To get stock springs off w/o compressors follow this:
1. disconnect shock from lower control arm
2. with jack under car, lower car to ground as far as you can
3. back inside car, undo the nut on top of the shock that holds the spring hat onto the shock all the way
4. slowly raise the car up which will slowly release tension off of spring.
5. now take off upper mounting hat from shock tower and remove strut assembly,
6. drink a cold beer and reflect on the goodness of ingenuity.

IMO, helm's is more helpful than chilton's. you can download the whole helm's for free at:
