brand new to this site, hope i can get some help. need to replace upper and lower ball joints in a i-beam suspension. a step-by-step would be greatly appreciated. my plan is to remove tie-rod end, loosen castle nut on lower, remove snap ring on same, loosen pinch bolt on top, and pound on steering knuckle till it drops free. then i would take it to a vice and push out the joints. in my NOVICE mind this makes sense, but would take any advice, tips, or tricks from your more experienced members. thanks.

Your on the right track. I would suggest getting ahold of a ball joint press. The ball joints need to be removed and installed into the knuckle in a certain order in order for the press to have the proper access to the joints. It will be self explanatory as you do it. They can usually be rented at a parts store.
