Vice City Disc Scratch. Sh!t

Well, I hoped it would never happen, but I am afraid it has. My months of being careful to have the VC disk in either the case or the PS2 have now become a waste. My friends, my copy of Vice City is no more.

It happened a few days ago, while I was upstairs watching the Leafs game. My sister is playing Vice City downstairs, when i hear a bang. At the time, i thought nothing of it, perhaps my cat knocked something over in the kitchen, which she likes to do.

Today, i was informed that Vice City has been freezing, and the PS2 has been making some odd noises. I havn't played PS2 for a few days, so this was the first i had heard of it.

I looked at the disc, and noticed a 3/4 inch long scratch about 1/3 or the way in, over top of one of the little Playstation logos. The scratch runs along the disc, the worst kind. Im not sure how deep it is, but it is deep enough to be significant.

I load up the game, and i play it for a few minutes before i hear a clicking noise, that seems like it matches the rotation of the disc, in terms of timing. I paused the game and the noise stopped, but when i unpaused and started moving around again the noise came back. a few seconds later, the game froze.

My sister tells me that a few days ago, while she was playing, the dog walked infront of the TV screen and tripped on the cord, which sometimes happens. On most occasions, the cord pops out of the PS2 and nestles itself on the floor, but this time the controller did not pop out, I am presuming because the cord got pulled sideways, and as a result the PS2 slammed into the side of the TV.

Let me briefly describe my setup. My TV is inside an entertainment center, and my PS2 sits vertically beside it on the left, tucked inbetween the side of the TV and the side of the entertainment center.

When the cord got pulled, it dragged the PS2 towards the left, and hit the TV. This much we know, So this is what i have come up with. When the PS2 hit the TV, the jolt must have been enough for the disc to come in direct contact with the tray, or something else inside the compartment. But here is the flaw in this concept. If the PS2 got dragged to the left, and hit the TV on the left side, the disc would have moved towards the left. Remember that my PS2 is standing vertically? Well the tray is on the right hand side.

I'm almost positive that my sister is telling the truth, because she had been playing the game for awhile before this happened, and so if the disc was scratched before, we would have known. Plus, i heard the bang, and i could also hear the noises from Vice City before it happened, so i know she didn't accidentally scratch the disk then blame it on the dog knocking the PS2.

So anyways, what i am wondering, is this. Is it at all possible that the disc could have been scratched while it was inside the PS2? I am going to go take a closer look at the tray in a minute, to check if there is anything that could have hit it from that distance inwards.

I was hoping that the laser did not hit the disc, and i have tested some other games and they are working fine.

Is it at all possible that the disc could have been scratched while it was inside the PS2?

here is an easy fix for you, go to your local blockbuster, rent vice city, put your game inside and keep the good copy.

First thing you shouldnt have your ps2 vertical it can really fuck up your games and your system like mine i had my ps2 for about 2 days got a vertical stand for it b/c it made it look cool i guess but when i went to play GT 3 a-spec it totally fucked itself up then i rested it the way it supposed to be and i never had a single problem since then

Mine just fits too well in my bookshelf horizontally to even think about putting it vertical. I have found that my old ps1 works better when its upside-down though.

About the CD scratch, the same happened to my Vice City CD, the PS2 got knocked over and there was a big deep scratch in the CD. It ended up costing me $5 (AUS) it get it repaired. The Game shop (Game Mania to be exact) is where I took it in, they had it for a day, then I picked it up the next day scratchless along with one of my Music CD's.

i have had only one prob with my ps2 being vertical, and it was my fault. i was putting a disc in and i dropped it, it slid off of the tray and into my trash can. i like jumped when it happened but it was ok. making a tray on the ps2 was a stupid idea, with gamecube you cant mess anything up bc its top loading.
