I bought a 92 supra w/ a blown head gasket and I hear that a lot of them have this problem. Even some people try to get it recalled but they won't do it. Does anyone know why this occours. And the motor fires up then goes dead, really hoping that the motor isn't fried. Only 110K miles

Well don't drive the car with a blown head gasket, just fix it- its simpler than you think, just take the head off, place a new head gasket, tighten the bolts and voila, new Supra engine.:alien:

yeah about the whole well known B/Hd with the 7m motor's your best bet is not to install a Toyota gasket go for high end aftermarket
i hear Greddy and Hks have them so if i were you thats what i would get

Well its not that simple just to replace the gasket after it blows;
depending on how long ago the gasket blew and how bad the head can warp alot
and that means you need to get the whole head machined.
if so the it costs about 1k. I would just replace the motor for about 800.
if you replace the motor then put a MHG with ARP head bolts.

If the head did not warp then you could just replace the gasket;
go with the HKS MHG.:D

Also re torque the head bolts to 85 lbs the factory torque nubers are not tight enough.

The stock head and block surfaces will need to be milled and/or lapped no matter what if your going to put on a MHG, it has to be perfectly smooth if you want it to last. Many people have gone back to the stock toyota head gasket and had no problems, the gasket wasn't the problem, it was the under torqued head bolts, which by the way need to be torqued to 72ft lbs, if you go with ARP bolts or studs they also should to be torqued to 72ft lbs, factory was 58ft lbs:frown:

In addition to the bolts not being torqued enough, the original gasket was flawed because it didn't have the metal rings around the cylinders like the redesigned one does. If you're going to make major mods, a MHG is a no brainer.

Yup, it was the tourque specs that were the problem. Independant testing show the head bolts not reaching thier yield range until 72 - 75lbs. Fel-Pro or Toyota gaskets are fine with correct torquing. Many (including myself) have pushed over 300 wheel hp with that gasket. If you're going to do it, and you want to keep pushing the envelope, getting a metal gasket is clearly better. I believe the Greddy design is the best. Plus they are the only manufacturer to offer gaskets in the stock bore size (83mm). Dispite what a lot of people might say, there is really nothing extra special about putting a metal gasket on the car. Some people will preach lapping, but it's not necessary. You should check for straightness as you should always on any head job. check and mill the head as necessary. If you only need to shave about 0.010" off the head or less, a 1.5mm Greddy MHG will put you exactly at the stock 8.4:1 compression ratio. The HKS 1.2mm will just slightly raise the CR to 8.46:1, but since it's an 86mm bore gasket, emissions and fuel economy will suffer because of the added surface area.

hmm ... just walked back to my PC and don't feel like writing anymore... sorry for the abrupt end

Need to be a bit more specific. You have a plug missing? - or a plug with no home? Where abouts - intake, exhaust?

Well he got it to start up since he posted this I believe so this problem should be solved, but I would bet it was the plug wire that went to the ignitor/coil, since he has a n/a.

If you're taking the heads off anyway, and if you plan at all to make it a fast machine, just spend the money and have o-ring slots machined into it.

Then you won't have to worry about blowing one of those.

You wouldn't gave to worry about blowing a MHG either, thats the whole point of using it. Very few people have actually blown a MHG even with very high boost, and if they have it was because they did something wrong, either not milling/lapping the head or improper installation, could even be bad tuning if thats the case. Theres no competition at all, spending lots of hours and lots of money having slots machined into the head and block for special O-rings or just simply having them milled and prepped for a metal gasket.
