Revell 1969 Chevrolet ZL1 Camaro

1/25 Revell 1969 Chevrolet ZL1 Camaro

After the ZL1 Corvette's terrific showings I wanted to build a companion model. In the early 1990's there were many articles about the Camaro ZL1 owned by Bill Porterfield, a GM engineer. The car was documented as the 3rd ZL1 Camaro built and sold to Berger Chevrolet in Illinois. The best part, it was Daytona Yellow like the Corvette! I already had some paint left over so I grabbed as many articles as I could to start the build.

The model is based on the Revell 1969 Camaro Z/28 kit and used pieces from the "Indy Pace Car" version of the same kit for the Big-Block parts. It was painted with the same Daytona Yellow from MCW as the Corvette and also features a Model Car Garage detail set. I did add additional hoses to the basic kit and scratch-built a carburator that has become my trademark. I didn't bother with the hassle of creating a smog-system for this car but it doesn't hurt the outcome one bit.

The model made it's debut at the 2000 Birmingham NNL and did quite well, not by winning, but by becoming my first model to be pictured in a magazine (Scale Auto Enthusiast, 2000 Contest issue)!! Later, it was also photographed for Model Cars magazine while at the CARS premier show in April 2000.

Cars I've built since have definitely been more detailed and won more events but this car will always be special to me!
