Shortly after completing the first ZL1 Camaro I began researching my next project, the Gibb/Harrell ZL1 Dragster. I posted requests for information on a few Camaro message boards hoping to find someone with pics they could scan. The first response was from someone who recently purchased a different car from the current owner of the Gibb/Harrell car, Bill Porterfield!!! I asked the writer what car he had purchased, and it was the ZL1 Camaro I had just replicated!! Charley was very anxious to see my model and, when he did, he offered to buy it right there! But this was my first magazine car!! I couldn't do it, but I offered to build him a replica. I told him I could even surpass the first car (understatement of my life!!) We agreed on a price and I was off again on another Camaro ZL1 model.
While this car used the same Revell base kits and Model Car Garage detail kit as the other car, I took this one a little further. Not satisfied with the finish of the photo-etch I polished it and then chrome-plated it with nickel silver. The results were fantastic!! The body used Vari-prime for the primer and I tried Metro Paints for the paint this time, fantastic! The engine as it comes in the kit has 19 parts. I added no less than 92 separate parts to the engine including a full and authetic smog-pump set-up, complete plumbing and wiring, hand bent aluminum brackets for all of the accessories, a carburator detailed with photo-etched linkages and pumps, home-made turned aluminum pulleys and distributor base, spark plugs, plug wires with correct boots, a functional dipstick, machined diverter valves, scratchbuilt wire looms, and straps for the heater hoses. The valve covers were thinned and sent to Little Motor Kar for rechroming along with other parts and the water pump was drastically altered for correct appearance and to handle the strain of a real rubber V-belt. The interior was fully replicated down to the photo-reduced dash gauges as well as the aftermarket gauges hanging from under the dash. There is also a photo-reduced copy of one of the magazines the real car was featured in on the passenger seat. The side windows were added and the chassis took some adjusting for proper stance and wheel location in the wheel wells. Additional decals from Slixx, Gopher details, Kieth Marks, and The Last Detail finish off the model. It competed once and swept the show with every award except Best Engine (My pal Doug beat me with a Top Fueler engine!)
