For me, one of the friendliest guys in Aus/NZ motorsports, not to mention talented, is a complete tragedy.

Peter,
Get well soon! I'm sure the whole of New Zealand and Australia is with me when I say that. We'll be praying for you, and hope that you get through this okay and are still able to conquer motorsport the way you have.
Go hard Possum.
Dave.

He was recc'ing a course for a hillclimb in a Subaru Forester at about 60kph and got hit head on by a Jeep Cherokee coming the opposite way at about the same speed...apparently went down a bank too.
Currently I believe two broken legs and a broken arm amongst other things, and he's in a drug-induced coma.
Coincidentally, over the weekend I was in the town near where he got injured and whose hospital he is currently in...I should've left a card :(

I heard read on one of the rally sites that they don't expect he will be able to drive competitively again.....it's really sad to hear considering the talent he has.
I hope he will make a complete recovery and that we will get to see him behind the wheel again.
Get better for us Possum.

Thanks to all. There has been no talk of a RECOVERY, let alone a FULL RECOVERY, let alone DRIVING again let along DRIVING COMPETITIVELY AGAIN. That is the seriousness of this incident.

Yeah I really hope that Possum pulls through- he will make a recovery- if his blood has remained stable for this long- but it's pretty clear we won't see him back ni the WRC Group N :(:(
All my prayers are with him

My thoughts go out to Possum and his family.
Hope he recovers well because motorsports in NZ wouldn't be right with out him there

As most know him or of him our hopes and prayers go out to him and his whole family.
Possume is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet! Arguably not only New Zealand's but Australaisa's best rally driver.

Well the latest news is NOT good :(
after test over this last weekend it revealed his head injuries to be worse than initally suspected. The family have decided that it is not in Possums best interests to continue life support.
So my thoughts go out to his family as they have been forced to make the hardest decision of their lives.
We'll miss you Possum

RIP Possum Bourne. 2003.
I am almost in tears. This is the most tragic loss for Oz/NZ motorsport ever. What an absolute champion. What a tragic waste...

Iv been watching TV to try and catch the report, but seem to keep missing it.

Iv been luckey enough to have meet him once, and seen him race several times. He really was a great guy and this is a huge loss to NZ motorsport.
He was the Rally equivilant of Bruce Mclaren, and will be remembered in the same light. A very talanted driver with a passion for his sport and a great guy who never had an ego and was always willing to help others.
We'll miss ya Possum.

It is a supreme irony that one of New Zealand's greatest competitive racers should meet his end while conducting a pre-race inspection of the course. The exact circumstances of the collision may never be fully explained, but sadly they are not that important any more. The world rally circuit has lost an amazing competitor, and his family has lost far more.
Thanks for all the memorable moments Possum. Thanks for being a great role model as a top competitor and a family man.Fate has robbed the rally community and the whole of New Zealand of a worthy hero.

May he find eternal peace and May his family keep his good spirit alive. Rest in peace, Possum. I am also saddened for those affected by the loss. I don't know how I can help but if I can, just PM me.:grey:

A very sad day for motorsport and such a loss to his wife and family.

I have to say he was truly the Peter Brock of Rally, nice bloke, good fan relations, and enjoyed all of what he was doing throughout his life. Truly a sad day for Motorsport, and as he was my favourite ARC driver along with Ordynskie, i have not taken this news to easily. All my thoughts go out the his family and friends, as even though im not taking it well, it is even harder for them. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US POSSUM, AUSTRALIANS & NEW ZEALANDERS NEVER FORGET A TRUE CHAMPION, YOUR CAREER WILL BE KEPT ALIVE FOREVER.
