D1 flagship luxury project

While other german automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have decades of super-luxo development behind them, VW has never moved away from the small car segment--until now. Spring '02 will reveal a top line luxury elite currently known now as the D1. The advent of the W-8 and W-12 powerplants will further escalate the D1 to production status, with these motors allowing the car to find itself with the likes of Bimmer and Benz. But will VW be competetive in the eyes of the consumer, with other classy luxury marques already on stage?
