head gasket

has anyone here ever changed a head gasket in their corsica?
if you did it your self how much did it cost and how much did it cost to get the head and block milled?
how bad an idea is it to put in a new headgasket without milling the head/block?
i'm asking because my girlfriend's 1990 v6 corsica needs a head gasket.
the shop it's at said it would cost between 1400-2000 dollars. fuck that.
any ideas/help appreciated here.

Whats it doing? Overheating or leaking coolant? I've seen to many of these
A. Be misdiagnosed for an oil leak or coolant leak, usually the intake manifold.
B. Crack cylinder heads around the spark plug holes and head bolt holes.

I changed the headgasket on my neon, so Im thinking a corsica would be an easier job. I was getting oil in my coolant. If your getting overheating, and you drove it like that for an extended period, chances are that your head is warped. But you can decide that once your down to the head. Good luck.

Re: head gasket

Head gaskets - there are 2 on your v-6 and 2 cylinder heads only cost around 50-100 dollars. But the parts do not cost that much - it is the labor to pull car apart, check heads for warpage, and see if they need to be milled or replaced. Also, you will need to remove the intake manifold before the heads - need these gaskets too. The head bolts must be replaced also as they stretch. I would recommend getting a head set as this would include the intake manifold gaskets, head gaskets, and head bolts - cheaper. But , talk to a certified mechanic to get an idea of time and labor as this will need to be done in a garage. Hope you have tools - especially air tools as it will go faster.
