where do you see the fumes at, inside of your car or outside?

The fuel pump is mounted on the engine. As far as I know there is no pump in the gas tank. With my '85 Caprice I usually smell at least a little fuel from the gas tank; can you be more specific -- where do you think it is coming from?

The smog technition did the diagnostic thru the fuel system and told me that some fumes are leakin from the top of the gas tank idk exactly wat it might be but my cousin told me it might be a vaccum hose located there or something of that nature. i was thinkin mayne the O-ring or somewhere around the sending unit but i have yet to drop the tank and take a look.

you have 3 lines,,,one is the vent line, 2nd is the supply line to the engine mounted mechanical fuel pump, and 3rd you have the fuel return line,,,,,
now my experience on several vehicles of this vintage its the return line leaking...it may be at the tank, or on the axle,, and possibly running back to the fuel pump....this line has some pressure in it,,,the supply line has a slight vacuum,,and if it has a leak it will cause your vehicle to have low fuel pressure,,not run very good..

after idling a few minutes you should be able to see dust/wet spot dust debris will smell of fuel....

if possible cut out the rusted line and install fuel line hoses with double clamps on each end...this line does have a small amount of pressure,,,very small so hoses can't be blown off..
