I tried the strap wrench but it did not work either. I also tried the tool in the above link but that is for a 3.0L not a 2.3l.
On the pulley there are 3 holes...right?
Well that is not really a water pump pulley, it appears to be a stationary pulley the clutch fan mounts to.
If this is the case I inserted a screw driver in one of the holes and from under the truck I put a pipe on the end of the screw driver and locked up the pulley like this. I then used and adjustable wrench and tapped on it with a rubber mallet until it came loose. Yes is comes off counter clockwise. Once you get the fan off that pulley behund it comes off with the timing belt housing.
