Continuing gasket problems?

Okay, took the truck for a 15 minute drive after replacing the intake manifold gaskets and valve cover gaskets, and I started getting smoke in the engine compartment. At first I thought it was oil that I spilled burning off, but when I pulled the filler cap the smoke was pouring out of it.

Replaced the PCV valve, amount of smoke is decreasing but still there.

When I pulled the drivers side rocker cover to do the gasket, there was a lot of coolant sludge on the underside, and when I pulled the PCV just now it looked like there was some sludge forming again on the bottom of the valve.

Where do I go from here?

Re: Continuing gasket problems?

Is there any smoke coming out the tailpipe? How bad was the leaking, how long was it like that. As for under the hood, the engine cannot smoke, it is essentially sealed. Is your exhaust manifold(s), y-pipe, are not leaking, and you see nothing coming out the tail pipe when the eninge is running, chances are it is just spilled fluids buring off.

When taking the oil filler cap off while the engine is running, you shouldn't really see any smoke/air escaping. The engine should kind of lower its idle a bit, but it should be alright. If your seeing a lot of pressure out the oil filler cap, you either have a clogged pcv valve and or pcv system, or have bad blow-by.

Re: Continuing gasket problems?

Thanks for the response.

It was pretty dark by the time I got home, but when I held a flashlight up to the tailpipe there was a bit of smoke. The exhaust was moist when I held my hand up to it but that's probably normal.

The intake gasket leak came on suddenly and strongly...I got it off the road quickly and half my coolant was in the oil pan. No sign of it in the oil again (yet), and I haven't driven it enough to see if I'm loosing coolant.

There was definately smoke coming out of the oil filler tube and dipstick tube, and possibly some other places I couldn't localize. Maybe just residual coolant burning off?

There was good vacuum coming from the PCV valve, and I can hear it opening and closing rapidly at idle. There was slight vacuum at the hose from the air intake to passenger valve cover.

I'm hoping I didn't mess up the intake gasket job...as long as the coolant is staying out of the oil I figure I'm okay for the time being.

Re: Continuing gasket problems?

Did you change the oil after the gasket job? This is critical.
