4l60e will not reverse, 98 Sierra

Truck is 1998 GMC Sierra Z71, 5.7

I recently changed the A and B shift solenoids as well as the 3-2 shift solenoid, Reverse worked fine for a couple days then I started noticing it did not want to reverse at a normal slow reverse and if I gave it a little gas it sounded like it binded up a little bit. I never attempted to give it alot of gas in fear making it too bad. It drives forward perfectly fine thankfully.

Today it wont go into reverse at all, I tried it in both 4hi and 4lo, there are no codes being thrown at all, .. however.. this may be related or not.. a few weeks before I did change a wheel hub and couple days later my anti lock brake light came on will not shut off, ive checked everything, connections all that and nothing.. I wouldnt think it would be related as it was and at one point the reverse gear was just fine.

Any help on this would be very helpful

Thanks!

chances are your reaction hub is broke in the back of the transmission inside.
common for 4l60e.i have 3 with 4l60e all had the same thing happen at different times.
i think you need a rebuild.they have updated reaction hub with 1 more planitary around the hub. but unless you know sombody that will give you a break a reman trans. is the way to go. hope you make out ok

All forwards are OK? If the sun shell broke, which is a likely thing, you also lose 2 & 4th. Google sun shell and let us know.

You do not have to rebuild, just do a repair replacing the sunshell. The upgraded sunshells do break and I know one transmission shop that can prove this, they have seen them broken. While inside, remove the snap ring for the steel for the clutches in the direct drum and look for 5 black springs. If you see them, remove them and throw them away. The aftermarket says to throw them away and GM says to put them back in.The problem with those 5 black springs is that they restrict the clutches from floating and burns them right up.

Re: 4l60e will not reverse, 98 Sierra

I had to rebuild my 4L60E that was in my '00 Blazer about 4 years ago - it only had 58,000 Miles on it. Lost 2nd, 4th, and reverse. I dropped the trans and xfer case, removed the bell housing, and then proceeded to pull the trans apart. IF YOU PAY ATTENTION, you can do this yourself. Since I was already into the front of the trans, I replaced the clutches as well. I was told they were the 1st gear and 2nd gear clutches that you wund up pulling out when getting to the reaction sun shell. Overall the repair cost me about $150 - which is a ton cheaper then the alternative. If you do it yourself - also remember that you don't want to force anything - take your time putting it back together. If you force it back together, you'll wind up bending the chutches and so forth. I'll say it again, TAKE YOUR TIME!!!

Use a T50 torx plus bit for the bolts holding the bellhousing in and you may have to heat them up removing them due to the locktite used.A regular T50 torx bit will fit,too sloppy.

Like wafrederick said - use heat, and not an impact to take the bellhousing off. Learn from someone else's mistake...
