If you hear a difference in the sound of how the engine is running, then this is a line that is leaking or is disconnected. Try to back track the offending vacuum line to the vacuum supply hoses at the blend door of your heater/AC controls. Listen for a characteristic whistling sound a missing vacuum line will make. The only other thing I can think of is that the vacuum motor at the blend door(s) is bad. Did everything revert to the defroster when it started going bad? It is a safety default mode.

Yes 97 my wife complained of Air coming out at Defrost;
Long story Short there was no Clutch Comp; I bought a ccrm at Salvage yd. 30 dollars the Fan relays and comp Relay are in a sealed unit;also I replaced Air Dryer and Orfice,Put vacum on system 5 hrs; Jumped the Clutch cut off Switch and serviced System ,This 96 -3.8 Windstar has two Air cond Evaporators,Everything is working fine,With one Eception,There is no vacum at each door,I Tied the Door open to allow cooling come thru the dash vents;nice and cool, and the back unit is good;;;;
Since I did not have Vacum at any door,I disconnected the 4 Vacum lines at the blend control, No vacum,there, is also an elec. plug also at this Selector;I was going to check the Vacum Resevoir under hood passenger side;Thanks for the Tip.
