00 Silverado won't start

00 Silverado, 177k miles

I've never had a problem with this thing, ever.

I drove to the gas station on my way home from work. Filled up 1/2 tank, went to leave and all it did was crank. It will just crank and crank but wont turn over.

I checked all the fuses and swapped relays around. nothing
I have all my electricals.
oil and coolant is full.

i have to go back to the gas station and get it running before they tow it.

any suggestions?

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

You need to check for lose of spark or fuel pressure.
What engine do you have?
Any security lights or check engine lights or codes?

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

177k miles and never had a fuel pump? You have truly been blessed--

Check your fuel pressure- or better yet blow some carb cleaner in the air intake- see if it tries to start in that...If so - you can pretty much rest assured your FP is history--

Oh- you can try the Whapppp on the tank if the fuel pump is proven inop- it may just jarr it enough to let it run, so you won't need the tow...done that about half the time.

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

it has the 4.8 V8
The check engine light is on, but the car isn't running. that light is always on when i turn the key forward. It had never came on before i got gas.

I had already wiggled/checked all the wires for the plugs and injectors while i was in the parking lot waiting for a ride. nothing obvious.
This happened out of the blue.

i ordered a FPR so i'll have that this afternoon.

Things i'll try next.

1. spray gas in the TB
2. whap on the tank
3. change out the fpr that i ordered.

hopefully that will do it. i don't want to be changing the FP

my brother just had the exact problem with his a month back but he hasn't resolved it yet.

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

Proper testing before throwing parts at it.

Got good hot blue spark to all plugs?
Got fuel pressure?
What is the fuel pressure readings.

why did you bother to spend time posting your questions ???

just start replacing parts...soon you'll get tired of spending cash for no positive results...

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

Did your fuel pump make a whinning noise when running before??

Can you hear it running now??

When my fuel pump went out at 147k miles I could put the key in the on position and then let the pressure build up enough to get me home to change it out.

Try that and see if that helps.

Check your fuel pressure

Is that a stab at the carb cleaner trick? Or him replacing the fpr for no reason. Far as I am concerned, the carb cleaner trick is by far the fastest and most proven trick I know of to check for fuel. If it hits he has spark...

the reason I said what I said is ,,,he is not following the recommended process of elimination by troubleshooting this correctly...
he is just buying parts ...

proper testing is the only way to properly repair any type of elecronic/electrical equiptment...

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

My money is on fuel pump,

He was low on fuel which let the pump heat-up, Fresh half tank of cold gas squeltched (sp?) the pump. Very common to die at the pump.

I find that the whap on the tank is relativley successful, Carb clean works better if you have it. Remember he was stuck at a gas station so that rules out scanning for codes or a fuel press test.

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

so far..

sprayed some carb cleaner in the TB and it tried to run. more so than just trying to start it up without it, where it would just crank

whapped the tank w/ a hammer. no luck.

pulled the vacuum hose on the fpr, it was dry, no gas.

i have no way to check fuel pressure right now since i don't have a guage.
i can't say i ever heard the fuel pump whinning prior to this

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

I am having one hell of a time getting the lock ring of off the fuel pump.
It is rusted like crazy and almost hard to tell what is actually a structural part of the ring. I tried to rotate it with a punch and hammer and it flakes apart.

It looks like it has 3 hooks located at 4, 8, and 12 o'clock that hold the ring down. I tried rotating ccw like stated already and it won't budge.

Am I missing something or it is just frozen on? I don't like using too much force when I'm unsure of how it comes apart.

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

I soaked the area in wd40. I was suspicious of how the ring came off because of the amount of force i used on it already and it didn't move. I assume it rotates ccw to remove.

electricals look fine.

I know you're going to scold me for not checking FP but i didn't becuase i found it unlikely that my fp would drop so abruptly when i got gas and the truck died. Considering it never showed any signs of failure prior.

Re: 00 Silverado won't start

You need to check for adequate fuel pressure. It could still be a clogged fuel filter. I work at a dealership. Never rule out the fuel filter. I'm not saying the fuel pump isn't the problem but you need to check the fuel pressure. If you have fuel pressure, but its low, it could be the filter. Did you ever check for spark? If so, what was the result? A no-crank condition is pretty broad so there is endless possibilities.
