2005 Chevy Classic trouble starting after putting in gas

My 2005 Chevy Classic won't start after I put in gas. I try about 4-5 times, waiting about 20-30 seconds in between, and then it finally starts up. This only happens after I put in gas. I've tried waiting 2 minutes after putting in gas before starting up. I'm not a mechanic, but would like some guidance before I take the car to someone.
Also, the Check Engine light has been on. The mechanic who checked the code the last two times said it was an EVAP code, but that it wasn't a big problem and probably not related to the engine trouble (for real?).
Any ideas folks?

Question Re: 2005 Chevy Classic trouble starting after putting in gas

Evap problem is usually the gas cap isn't sufficiently tightened or is bad and needs replaced ! Don't know that would keep car from starting though ? More info !
