My car, ( 95, 5sfe, automatic, 146,0000 miles) that had sat for around 12 months before I got it, only idles between 400 and 600 rpm on the cars tach.. Reading the manual on checking the iac valve, it says "with the engine warmed up and idle speed set correctly, do ......" --- except I don't see any way to set the idle speed.

I can suck on the egr valve and hear it pop up and down, so I don't believe that is my problem. My idle speed is the same whether the car is warm or cold.

If I turn on the ac the idle will rise 200 rpm which I think tell me my IAC is working properly.

A little lost here. Just swapped out my tranny and this is my last obsticle.

Does anyone know of a way to do an on car test to see if my egr valve is stuck open on my 95 camry 5sfe? My idle sucks

I figured it out myself, so I'll post it so it may help someone else.

Start the car and in my case where it is not idling high enough, rev up the rpm to around 750 by hand on the throttle body.

Then unplug the egr hose on the top. I used another piece of hose to plug onto the top of egr valve and applied vacuum by sucking on the hose.

If your egr had been seating properly when you suck on the hose rpm will drop a couple of hundred.

Quit sucking and the rpm will rise back up.

In my case egr is working so the hunt goes on for the low idle. will try cleaning idle control valve next, but seems to be working because when I turn on the ac idle will rise 200 rmp or so.

I think my problem is fuel. when I hit 2000 rpm in neutral the engine starts "hunting" and rpm will flex from 1800-2000. Higher rpm --no problem..

Already swapped out 02 sensors, temp sensor, adjusted throttle sensor, new plugs,cap rotor, wires. Even swapped out the computer. No vacuum leaks. Nothing helped.

95 camry, 146,000.

Bought needing tranny, no test drive. Swapped tranny, but idled at 400-500 rpm and when throttled to 2000 rpm the idle hunted between 1800 and 2000 rpm. Was running real rich too.

Turns out that the vacuum tube coming off of the MAP sensor wasn't hooked up. I noticed this after testing my coil and testing and resetting my throttle position sensor which was slightly off. This of course was after plugs, wires, cap rotor, and swapping almost all other sensors off of a part car that I had available.

Plugged in the vacuum line, cranked it up. Beautiful 750 rpm idle. Throttled up to 2000 rpm--steady.

Finally. I now have a descent car for around $900. Some quick paint and I'm off to go surfing. I customized some racks that came off an Isuzu Trooper parts car I have in the back yard.

way to go bro...invested alot of stuff in it just to find out that the problem was just a unhooked hose. Thanks for the info.

I don't mind the investment into the tuneup supplies.. As far as swapping out my sensors and computer, I just spent $100 for the right to strip out under the hood on a parts car. Now I have axles, dist, starter, alt., sensors, brake master, power steering, fuses, etc....I didn't keep the computer, but at least it help eliminate the possibility. Not too bad.
