1991 Camry Heater-A/C fan inop

My blower fan finally quite working. It started working intermittently about a year ago and all i had to do was hit the dash above the environmental controls and it would work again. Then it got to where it would stop working only after the car was restarted and while driving down the road it would start back up. Now it does not work at all. Please help.

If you are talking about it not working at any fan speeds, check the electrical connection at the fan first. If it's making good contact there and the fan doesn't turn, then the fan itself is probably bad. If the fan works at some fan speeds and does not work at other speeds, then you have a bad blower motor resistor.

If you need help look through the 91 maintenance manual listed in the "Factory Service Manuals" thread at the top of the forum.

You say at one time you could smack the dash above the EC panel and make it work. Reminds me of a problem I had with an 87 Camry (same generation as yours). The temp control switch slowly went dead killing any heat. I figured the switch was bad so I took the panel apart to see if I could fix the switch and found some of the solder joints connecting the switch to the circuit board were cracked. I retouched them with a soldering iron and presto, I had heat again. You may have something similar. This would be a last resort move as it took a fair amount of time and patience to complete.

Sounds like the blower speed switch has gone bad. Sometimes as RIP mentioned you can remove and disassemble the switch to clean the contacts of built-up oxidation. Use a fine grit sandpaper (800-1000), then blow away any residue, apply a light coat of bulb grease, reassemble, and reinstall. If it still doesn't work, then the switch resistors could be bad (they typically run hot). Goood luck!
