the trim bezel around the dash just pops off, it has metal "clips" that arent damaged by this, ie reuse them, no plastic clip crap. then just unbolt the screws holding it in.
If you aren't gonna replace it make absolutely sure you have the key off, and don't leave it unhooked long enough to run down the internal battery if it has one....
the later models CANNOT be theft unlocked by the enduser, a gm tech with access to gm website and a gm tech 2 must be used to unlock it. If it says it locked when you put it back in just button it up and take it to a dealer, cause you can't fix it. They usually only charge 1/2 hour or so to do this though.
If you are replacing it with an aftermarket, void all my comments and who cares, cause if it goes in any other car or truck it will have to be unlocked anyway, so who cares....
This feature is in the radio itself, so if you put in an aftermarket radio, it will work fine.
