Whining noise coming from manifold

Hows everyone doing? Good I hope. Anyways, recently my battery on my 02 Overland died from sitting a couple weeks with the alarm on. During the time I was jump starting with jumper cables, the car had a hard time starting. I finally got it started but as soon as I give it gas the rpms would drop below normal and stall. It would start up but it takes a few cranks and when it starts it doesn't start up crisp like how it used to. I figure I need to change the plugs since it hasn't been done in a while. I also need to clean the throttle body. My main concern is that now,all of a sudden, I hear a whinning noise coming from the manifold area. At first I thought it was the alternator and or the idler pulley and belt but through further investigation the sound seems to be emanating from the manifold area. I used the cardboard tube from a paper towel roll to pinpoint where the sound was coming from. Lol, not the best tool but it works. Any ideas what could cause a whining sound coming from that area? Cracked manifold perhaps? It's very noticeable at idle but when I rev it up the whine seems to dissipate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Whining noise coming from manifold

I did some research online and someone said that if the IAC motor is dirty or faulty it will make a whine or whistling noise. I also read that a leaky manifold gasket could cause that problem. Anybody got any ideas?

Do you have any exhaust leak? I've heard of the iac motor going bad, but nothing about a whining noise.

After letting it sit for awhile, fluid checks and new plugs are a good idea. When you add gas and it dies, that might be the throttle position sensor going bad. Hard starting can be caused by a bad crankshaft position sensor. What engine do you have, and how many miles?

Re: Whining noise coming from manifold

I don't think I have any exhaust leak. It's a 4.7L HO with about 230,000 kms, mostly highway kms. I just started it up again today. I had to jump it again, weird b/c I have a battery maintainer hooked up and the battery was kind of dead. I guess the battery might be too weak to charge. Anyhow, to elaborate further, it doesn't stall when I give it gas. It stalls intermittently when I give gas then release the pedal. The rpms just drop to the point where it stalls. It doesn't do it all the time. Out of 5 times I give it gas it stalls twice. It idles fine however but I still here that slight whistling whine type noise coming from the intake manifold area.

No, there's no check engine light.

I had a bad IAC valve on my '97 laredo (6 cyl). Would shift in/out of park/drive and the idle would drop out and almost stall. I also would experience more of a 'whistling' sound than a 'whining' sound with it when giving it gas on the road as well.

When I pulled the IAC out, it was obviously bad as it was almost fully extended. Replaced it and the whistling went away along with the RPMS dropping out randomly in neutral or when shifting.

Yah your right, it is more of a whistling sound. I can't really hear it from the inside. It's only really noticeable when the hoods up and I rev it from the throttle cable. I haven't yet driven it b/c of the stalling issue. It idles fine but as soon as I give it gas and let go of the pedal the rpms drop to the point where the engine stumbles and then stalls. But like I said earlier, it doesn't stall out everytime. I'll check and clean the throttle body and IAC motor, change plugs and see if that solves the problem. I will post back. Just waiting for my craftsman tool set before I do anything...lol. Anyways thanks for the reply ncbovid. Much appreciated.
