Autoamatic transmission oil leak problem 1998 gclozlander 05-29-2009, 05:36 AM Hello, Would like to seek your advice regarding my transmission oil leak problem. I have my 1998 Grand Cherooke limited automatic transmission oil leak problem. I have brought the jeep in the mechanic to fix it last wednesday and then on friday morning the leak resume again. I already replace the oil gasket with the new one and still there is leak. Can anybody help me to permanent fix this problem? Im shedding money to buy automatic transmission oil to fill up the lost leaking oil? JeepForever 05-29-2009, 06:45 AM Transmission leaks are a tough one and I wish I had an answer. I had leaks a few years ago, right around when I had to have my tranny rebuilt (in my '94 GC). Ever since then it's been dripping (about the size of a quarter on the floor each night). I had a 3 year warranty on the rebuild so after a year I took it to the transmission place and they checked the leaks, replaced a few seals, and sent me on my way. It was good for a bit (maybe a few days), then leaked again. I've determined that it's cheaper for me to top off the fluid each month than to lose a day of driving. I add probably 3 quarts per year to the transmission. Lakes, rivers, and streams swallow up the old fluid :-(. Sorry I don't have a better answer. If it's really bad I recommend taking it back to the mechanic and insisting that they fix the leaks at no expense to you (if that's what you paid them to do in the first place). Also, be sure you (or they) clean all around the engine and transmission so the source of the leak can be detected. Sometimes the leaks start up near the engine and trickle down to the transmission, which can mislead you into thinking it's a tranny leak. Remember, tranny fluid is red. Motor oil is brown. Let us know what you come up with. Biigpuker 05-29-2009, 07:38 AM I agree, gotta find out where it's coming from. I have taken mine to the manual car wash and sprayed under the hood and under the car and drove it home and parked it on top of a big sheet of cardboard and was able to track the leak down. But if I paid someone to fix it I would be be back there talking to the boss. ozlander 05-29-2009, 09:13 AM Transmission leaks are a tough one and I wish I had an answer. For now, i really pay so much attention on the transmission oil level. 4x4 blazerguy 06-02-2009, 01:20 AM My 98 ZJ 5.9 Limited was leaking from the neutral safty switch. nova73noir 06-04-2009, 10:47 PM my jeep was leeking by a bad output shaft speed sensor... if can help you that part cost around 25$ ozlander 06-07-2009, 09:18 AM Dear Jeepforever, Thanks a lot. Yes, definitely i would really bring back the jeep to the mechanic tomorrow. Hope to resolve the leaks permanently. For now, i really pay so much attention on the transmission oil level. I already brought my 98 GCL jeep in the mechanic to check for the Tansmission oil leak but they told me to replace the oil pan. Does changing the oil pan really resolve this problem? nova73noir 06-07-2009, 08:30 PM maybe or not you already change the gasket but if you dont take one from mopar its maybe the trouble because other gasket are thin and cheap but if your pan is in bad shape its maybe time to change it too!! ozlander 06-10-2009, 08:32 AM maybe or not you already change the gasket but if you dont take one from mopar its maybe the trouble because other gasket are thin and cheap but if your pan is in bad shape its maybe time to change it too!! Thanks nova, my oil pan is in bad shape. There is no oil pan available in the Supply store and they told me to get on in the junkyard. Again thanks a lot for your help. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
