disributor installation

i changed the ditributor from my old engine to the one i just bought , i turn the crank and line the mark with the line on the block itself because neither engine has the little timing mark indicator , also i set the rotor button pointing the the #1 plug wire on the distributor cailooked in the engine to see if i could see the top of the piston (i did) so did i do this procedure right because the engine wont start also do this engine suppose to have a timing mark indicator

Re: disributor installation

You may very well have the distributor off by 180 deg. Put the piston back up to top dead center and pull the dist. Put it back in pointing to #6.

Re: disributor installation

When you installed the distributor it is possible that you were on the exhaust stroke for #1. To check for certain you need to pull the valve cover of and bar the engine over. Watch for the intake valve to open, keep barring the engine over until the valve closes and the piston comes up to TDC. Now you can install the distributor pointing to the #1 on the cap.
If the rotor was pointing to#6 At TDC you were 180 deg. off

Re: disributor installation

What is the engine??? 6 cyl or 8 cyl.?
Follow the procedure #2 in this document and it will work the first time. http://www.justanswer.com/uploads/Bl...eplacement.pdf
This is written for 5.7L 8 cyl. If you havwe the 4.3 L 6cyl, then the dist will point to the #6 insteasd of #8. This 6 and 8 does not refer to cylinder number, but the total number of cylinders in the engine. Both the 6 cyl and 8 cyl distributor use the same casting so the 6 and 8 are both cast in.
