Parcel shelf solution

foI like many geo metro hatchback owners have contacted Chevrolet and inquired about buying a parcel shelf to hide our nice speakers or what ever in the back of our geo's, only to fall out of our chairs when were quoted over 400 dollars for that thin cheesy little thing.

So I took the most logical step possible, I made my own.

Heres a breif how to:

Get yourself a box knife,
A large piece of cardboard
An equally large piece of paneling 1/8"
Duct Tape
Caullking and gun
Spray adhesive
Auto motive carpeting that matches your cars interior
A small rod or tent pole and cut it to length to fit across the back in those lil notches.

First cut your cardboard to a reasonable size larger than you need but still small enough to fit into the back of your geo.

Slowly, and I do mean slowly trim it down to size, If you goof up, cut another piece of cardboard, and start again. We want to make it look correct after all.

Once your cardboard fits nicely like the factory parcel shelf, take it over to the paneling, and trace it out (rough side up).

Now cut out the paneling, to the shape you traced on it.

Place the rod in its position and lay your nice piece of paneling down in place with the rear hatch closed. Climb inside and mark the location of where the paneling sits on the rod.

Now open the hatch, and carefully without bumping it, tape the rod to the paneling about every 6 inches.

Now carefully take out the parcel shelf, and flip it over, and apply caulking wherever you didnt tape the rod to the panel.

Let this dry up, then remove the tape, and finish the rest of the length so the caulking is nice and solid all the way across the rod.

Once its dry completely, flip it over and take your spray adhesive, and spray the entire top with it, covering it evenly.

Now lay your carpeting over it, and press down firmly, and ensure the entire carpet piece, is smooth, and has no kinks in it.

Flip the panel over, and lay some heavy items on it, to ensure good adhesion.

Let this sit over night in somewhere warm, with lots of airflow (not inside your home, it stinks alot)

The next day with a razor blade or your box knife, carefully trim the carpeting along the panelings edge.

Next, and this is optional, buy some edge trim from an auto parts store, and carefully press this along the edges of the parcel shelf you've made.

To prevent rattling apply some self stick one sided adhesive foam along the sides underneath the parcel shelf where it rides on the plastic along the sides.

Viola, your done, congrats, you just save your self, 400 bucks!

Bumped for update (Pics)

The tent pole is just a a little weak and it bows abit in the center, but nothing really noticeable. This can be fixed by adding a piece of galvanized angle metal found at a hardware store. It feels very rigid in the car.
