96' tahoe signal trouble!

Hi, I have a 96' 5.7 with 175k. The left turn signal stays solid when the headlights are on. When the headlights are off everything works fine. No problems with the right turn signal. I've checked all bulbs and changed the flasher. Any advise? I will post results. THANKS

You may have dirty contacts at the end of the multi-function switch (signal stalk).

Try spraying some electrical contact cleaner inside and work the lever a few times.

With any luck that MAY work.

Note: this MAY also only be a temporary fix.

Re: 96' tahoe signal trouble!

I would check the headlight ground on that side of the vehicle, sounds like they are trying to pull ground through turn signal circuit on that side. Almost all vehicles have separate grounds left/right for headlights. Usually a single black wire bolted to the radiator support. Has any work been done to that area? or any body work?

Re: 96' tahoe signal trouble!

sorry for the late reply. I checked all bulbs(front and back), installed a new flasher relay, and checked headlight grounds-but the blinker still stays solid when headlights are on. I also lubricated the signal handle. Not sure what to do next?

Re: 96' tahoe signal trouble!

Sounds like a bad multifunction switch. I can't remember what year they went to the connector being at the switch, but if yours has the old style where it's under the dash you could unplug it and see if it still does it. If it does, there's a short to voltage on the headlight wires. If it doesn't do it, then I'd say, 90% sure, that it's a bad multifunction switch.

If you've got a trailer connector on it, make sure the tail light terminal isn't bent and touching the left turn/brake terminal.

So I go to this get-together at a friends house, not remembering it's a few days before Halloween. I see a bunch of dirty looking strangers. Then I see a guy that was clearly wearing a Halloween costume and I make the connection, and say "Oh yeah, Halloween... y'all goin' as a group of bums?". Turns out they weren't wearing costumes.

Re: 96' tahoe signal trouble!

Forgot to ask...is it the turn signal in the dash or the signal on the front of the vehicle?

Re: 96' tahoe signal trouble!

It's both the turn signal on the dash and the front of the vehicle, blink once then stay solid with the headlights on. Also just noticed that the dash dims slightly with the headlights off when I step on the brake pedal. THANKS EVERYONE FOR THE GOOD ADVISE!
