1/12 Ferrari Testarossa (Revell + scaledetails)Emilssi 05-01-2009, 07:10 PM Hello everyone! My name is Emil and I am a true AF addict. Although I've been a member of AF for some time this will be my first WIP ever. Perhaps I haven’t got the experience and skills that most of you guys have, but I know that I can count on your support and professional advice. Anyway back to the model: It is a somewhat controversial old Revell 1/12 kit. Yes, it’s not the most detailed kit in this scale but with a bit of effort, some scratch building and a few etched parts I should be able to turn it into a decent model of a truly beautiful car. http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15460.jpg http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15461.jpg I started with the interior. The seats have been given handles at the bottom, which the kit was missing. I used revell enamels for the seats and sealed them with humbrol satin varnish http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15576.jpg http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15578.jpg Comments and criticism are welcome:wink: Emilssi 05-01-2009, 07:26 PM Then I moved on to main panel. I decided to open all air vents since Rvell's ones were hardly good enough for 1/24 scale:disappoin. But I am not going to complain about the quality of the kit anymore, since I guess we should be gratefull to Revell for at least producing the model of Testarossa in 12th scale. Emilssi 05-02-2009, 08:21 PM The left vent is painted and test fitted to the dashboard http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15003.jpg So is the right one http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15006.jpg http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15552.jpg The picture of both vents fitted to the dashboard. I built them in different positions (left is open wider than the right) to add a bit of realism to it http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15007.jpg Carpets were made of... wet wipes (trust me they look much more realistic than on the pics.) I find this method easier and more realistic thn flocking http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15000.jpg http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15001.jpg I made the carpets on the floor a little bit dirty but the floor will probably be covered with small removable carpets anyway (if I manage to hand paint the Ferrari logo on them or come up with some other way of transfering the logo on to the carpets) http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15555.jpg http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15554.jpg I will appreciate your comments and suggestions:) KevHw 05-02-2009, 09:00 PM Everything looks really good so far. I think the wet-wipe idea works well and I'll have to try it myself. It's also nice to see another Londoner. Looking forward to more. Hemi Killer 05-03-2009, 02:49 AM Hey I am building this car as well. I also have the Scale Details kit, but it doesnt seem like any of the phot etched parts are the right scale. everything is too big. Did you notice this as well? Emilssi 05-03-2009, 06:23 AM Hey I am building this car as well. I also have the Scale Details kit, but it doesnt seem like any of the phot etched parts are the right scale. everything is too big. Did you notice this as well? Yes, I had simmilar impression with some of these parts. However, many scaledetails parts like the speakers (which absolutely have to be used since in the kit they are represented by a decal:banghead:), http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC14951.jpg central air vent (which is very poorly moulded) http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC14953.jpg or the control pannel http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC14952.jpg Seem to be well etched and up tp size. The highlight of the model will definitely be very well made (and up to scale) scaledetails Ferrari badges: http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15478.jpg For me the worst flow of the scaledetails PE set is that it gives you only half of the parts i.e. only 2 brake discs PS If you're building this model or in fact any major exotic car model, you'll love this website for great reference pics: www.motorcars-intl.com (http://www.motorcars-intl.com) Emilssi 05-04-2009, 12:28 PM Hello everyone, Another quick update. I just want to show you the reference pic of the steering wheel and the kit part. 1. the part http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15557.jpg And my reference photo: http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/Ferrari_Testarossa_31.jpg The difference is evident – the central area of the kit part, the one with the logo is huge and really highly raised. Fortunately I have perfect solution for it in form of pe parts. You can also see there other great testarossa, brembo, pinnifarina logos, and a really nice touch from scaledetails – sun glasses. http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15564.jpg Hemi Killer 05-05-2009, 01:11 AM I do not remember seing sunglasses in my kit, do they make different PE kits? Hmmm Emilssi 05-05-2009, 08:26 AM I do not remember seing sunglasses in my kit, do they make different PE kits? Hmmm Which kit have you got? There are 2 kits. First is with the badges, tools, seat belts etc http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15593.jpg And more complex one with F40 and Testarossa engine, brake, interior parts etc. However it is missing Ferrari logos (probably to force modellers to buy both expensive sets), which I think is unfair:nono: http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/SNC15590-1.jpg P.S. Do you know about any other aftermarket parts for this model? janositamas 05-05-2009, 01:24 PM Very nice job so far, I like it! As for transferring the Ferrari logo onto the carpet, you may try a leftover Ferrari PE logo (painted the desired color) and glue it to the carpet instead of hand painting it! Hemi Killer 05-05-2009, 10:37 PM I must have overlooked the sunglasses, but I do not have the first kit you posted. I am missing the logo for the rear of the car, it must be on the other set. Emerald1999 05-08-2009, 04:12 PM Could you show how you did the "wet-wipe" carpets? The results look very good, and I am interested in learning the method. There may be a tutorial here. Twowheelsrule 05-08-2009, 08:25 PM Could you show how you did the "wet-wipe" carpets? They come in a container moist with alcohol and sometimes soap to clean your hands and such. He must have let it dry, then painted it, and glued it in to place. I would like to see a tutorial if it would help. TW gtziaf 05-09-2009, 02:23 AM Excellent job. I wait for your progress. The results look very good, and I am interested in learning the method. There may be a tutorial here. Hello everyone, Thank You all for your comments and encouragement. I’m very glad you were interested in the w-w method. In fact in practice it is much easier than one might think. The wet wipes can be gotten from almost every drug store. I use fragrance free cleansing wipes from Boots but you can use almost any wet wipes, make sure though that they are plain – without any pattern etc. There are a few simple steps of applying them: 1)Dry the wipe thoroughly – good thing is that when they dry you can choose how fluffy you want your carpets to be by rubbing them with a finger. 2)Apply heavily thinned white glue on the surface to be covered by the carpet. Make sure the glue is not to thick otherwise the carpet my get some “hard, flat spots” 3)Apply the wipes and make sure, that the whole area is fully covered 4)Once the glue has dried, it is ready for paint. Use heavily thinned paints and soft paintbrush. I usually use Revell acrylics because they can be thinned with water, but I have also used Tamiya acrylics with good results. The benefit of this method is that when the paint is thin, it is enough to touch the carpet with a soft brush and the paint automatically spreads on the carpet – it almost looks like magic. I prefer to paint the carpet on the model rather than before gluing it since acrylic paint could be badly affected by the watery glue + unpainted wipe conforms better than the painted one. Also try to paint it at one go, since once painted and dry, the tissue doesn’t absorb more water. 5)And lastly you can easily and effectively weather your carpets like you can see on my Ferrari. You just add a drop of flat black or smoke etc. to your paint mixture (which has to be really watery!) and stir it, then leave it for 30 sec or so to settle a bit. Your thinner should look a bit dirty. Then apply it with a brush like you did with the base colour. Remember that it has to be done before the paint has dried to achieve the desired effect. And remember – Don’t overdo it:nono: That’s pretty much it. Thanks for reading and I hope it was helpful for you. I will also try to post some pictures of how I do it when I start making floor mats for my TR hopefully next week. If you have any questions I’ll be happy to answer them. P.S. Sorry If it was too long and too boring. Twowheelsrule 05-09-2009, 11:25 PM Not boring at all! Thanks for the info. on the carpet, it does look like an effective for more color choices of carpet. Keep up the good work, TW Emilssi 05-13-2009, 01:06 PM Excellent job. I wait for your progress. But Mythos is cool as well. I'm looking forward to your next updates. Oh, and the PE parts are hose clamps to be used on the engine plumbing. More updates on my project next week - after my last exam. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
