Temperature gauge shoots straight up?

Guys i need help! I have a 1982 2.5 944 and when i turn on the ignition before even starting the engine the temperature gauge shoots straight up to the red?Any ideas will be greatly appreciated

99.99% chance the sending unit wiring is chaffed and grounded out.

Sorry can't help you out it's exact location, just passing through and saw your question. It's normally a one wire sensor in the cylinder head.

If i remember correctly the temp sender unit is located on the top outlet neck near the air purge.
