1987 Dodge Raider Shuts off after 5-6 minutes

I have a 1987 Dodge raider, basicly an imported Pajero. On startup it runs fine but as soon as the choke opens up, it shuts off. It's a 4cyldr 2.6L with a Mikuni dual barel Carb. Any help would be appreciated as we've been trying to figure it out for the last two months.
