There are three holes in the back of the distributor, two of them are hour glass shaped to try and stop you from jamming the cam pin in them the third readily accepts the cam pin. That is it, computer does the rest.
You could not time it anyway with the damper hub NOT being cut for a key, even if you marked TDC and made a pointer the hub could move.
The crank is cut for a key and there are keyed hubs available.
