Re: How to replace front rotors & brake pads 2002 Camry LE

First, welcome to AF...hope you find all the info you need here.

Second, you originally posted this to a thread on a different topic...it has been moved and given its own thread.

Third, rotor and pad replacement is not very difficult but does require a few specific tools, such as a C-clamp, brake grease, metric socket or wrench set, torque wrench, jack and stands, shop towels, brake cleaner solvent, a coat hanger or other heavy wire, and a drip pan. Various auto parts sites and your local library usually carry free copies of repair manauls. Autozone is usually the most referred to since they have a good online system. It's free registration and you can store all your vehicles online for quick parts referral, repair info, even recommended maintenance...pretty slick.

Basically,
1) Loosen front wheel lug nuts, jack up front and put onto jack stands.
2) Remove front wheels.
3) Remove two bolts holding brake caliper using wrenches/sockets. Pull caliper off and hang to the side using wire.
4) Slide out old pads and compress caliper piston back into bore using c-clamp. Suck out brake fluid from reservoir under hood to prevent overflow.
5) Brake rotor should slide off or be held on by retainer clips over the lugs.
6) Install new rotor and clips if applicable.
7) Install new pads into caliper using the anti-squeal shims (some are already riveted or bonded to the pad backing)
8) Firmly grasp slide pin heads (what the caliper holding bolt screwed into) and pull out. Inspect for wear, replace if present. Clean old grease and re-lube. Reinsert into slide pin hole.
9) Reinstall caliper onto rotor. Torque bolts to 25 ft-lb.
10) Repeat for opposite side.
11) Pump brakes to seat the new pads to rotors. Top off brake fluid (fluid flush is preferred, refer to stickies for that info).
12) Reinstall wheels, snug tight the lugs, and lower car off jack stands.
13) Tighten lugs to 76 ft-lbs.
14) Break in new pads by avoiding panic stops, towing, or mountainous travel for the first 100-200 miles.

Hope this helps!

To add to what jdmccwright has posted, there are some great diagrams in this thread in the FAQ's pages. They are copied from the Toyota factory service manuals.

There is a Toyota factory service manual for your vehicle stickied at the top of this forum. Everything you need to know is in there.
