Requesting advice on new car compared to the feel of my old one

although i realize there is no greater help in deciding what new car to get than to test drive them... i figured i would ask the web if it had any advice.

i have been driving a hand me down 88' monte carlo ls for a few years now, and although it doesnt have really any problems with it getting from point A to B... it has clearly been around a while, is a little rusty, and overall is just bigger than what i think i would like to drive. guess i always feel like im going to smack into something, and usualy overcompensate for distances when i dont actualy need to.
with all of that said, i do like the somewhat loose steering to it compared to new cars the respond to the slightest movement of the weel and obviously take less effort. this relxed feel and the overall sive of the car that i feel for the interior is something i like. i have only put forth enough time to testdrive a few cars, one being the mazda 3. i liked the looks of it, but am not used to feather(at least in comparison) brakes and gass. but moreover, i felt sorta scrunched in the seat. even with moving the stearingweel and seet a little. i am not ginormous, but aparently a lazzy 6'1" is big enough for some cars. i was recomended by some to look into things like the mazda 6, and pontiac g6.
obviously i still need to test them out and wonder wheather i want a v6 or not. i dont travel too far as of yet so that might not matter as much as the feel of the car.

anyway, figured i would throw my situation out there and see if there was any advice. or at least any opinions that might narrow a search down, since when i explained this to the last dealer i saw they just looked at my like " how the hell am i supposed to help someone that doesnt know what they want". maybe i just want a little more room... a not so huge and ugly stearingweel and dash also couldnt hurt. (also, now that i am thinking of it...i am also going for used, and hopefully for under 20k).
thanks for any help.

Re: Requesting advice on new car compared to the feel of my old one

Your 1988 Monte Carlo is definitely going to feel different than any new car you drive . The technology , in new cars , is light years ahead of what was " state - of - the - art technology " when your Monte was built . Throw in the years of wear and tear your Monte has endured and there's no way it can compare to anything new . One place your Monte would beat many of the new cars would be in vision from the driver's seat . Many new cars , especially the smaller ones , have blind spots and you feel like you're sitting in a cave while driving down the road . The Monte , being much larger , doesn't give you that confined feeling and is more comfortable . You might think you'd have a problem adapting to the new cars and you might . But likely the problem would be short-lived and you'd quickly adapt ! Don't know if I helped or not ? Good luck !

Re: Requesting advice on new car compared to the feel of my old one

Thank you very much, my knowledge in cars is very limited and i was just happy to have something to drive...whatever it was throughout the years.

what you said was helpful, however i was also seeking any recommendations that someone might have about something being less of a "boat" as far as size and control. yet still having a comfortable interior, as far as a laid back feel. obviously i recognize that there is some acceptances i will have to make since i am asking about a smaller car in the first place. however, what i have looked at so far felt a bit crowded for body positioning behind the wheel. that's why i was saying my next step was to look at things like the mazda6 or Pontiac g6 over things like the mazda3 that i test drove.

if the monte carlo wasnt simply getting old, and i was usualy scared that i was misjudging distance because the car was awfull large....than i would simply stick with it because it does have many nice points to it.

anyway, if anyone has advice about picking a new car that i can manouver(without as much worry over size), but still is considerate of a cofortable interior that doesnt feel as crowded as the mazda3 did for me....
would love to hear it.
and thanks again for your response.
