Metro has grinding problems--please help

Hello,

I am looking to join this forum with the purchase of a 94 metro, however before I buy it, i need to try and figure out what is wrong with it. Here is the description the seller gave me, any help is greatly appreciated:

1994 Geo Metro - Runs, but not driveable

5spd, 203k miles, 100k on newer engine, brand new tires, brand new clutch (Jan 2009).

Engine runs great in neutral and with clutch depressed. There is a grinding sound when driving in gear, and the car shudders. I believe it is either the transmission or a shot CV axle. I am leaving for the military in a week and do not have time to fix it myself - shoot me an offer!!!

I am not sure what the problem is; however it has trouble staying in gear, grinds, etc... The clutch was replaced in January of 2009 and it is working just fine. The tranny was last serviced in February (gear oil swap). I have records for the clutch

PLEASE HELP ME BEFORE I GET INTO TOO HUGE OF A PROJECT!!

If the car is popping out of gear it most likely is a transmission problem...not a CV joint issue. This will require either rebuilding of the transmission (See Doctor Bill's most excellent post) or replace with a junkyard transmission.

On the other hand, Why bother? I'd look for a car to buy that doesn't have these issues.

Sounds like the problems I had with mine. I was getting 50+ MPG from the car, so I decided to fix it. No matter what happens to my Geo, I will fix it. The fuel savings pay me back very quickly.

Here is an illustrated guide for the trans removal if you just want to swap it. The wife and I did it at home over the weekend..............

Yep, sounds like a synchro problem to me. However, a tranny can be easily obtained at a reasonable price.
