hello all. this has been happening for a little while now. whenever i drive (and especially when i'm moving in reverse), i'll hear what sounds like a scraping/screeching noise coming from the wheel area. i think i dealt with this before with my mailbu, and it had something to do with the brakes or rotors. i don't hear or feel any grinding when i apply the brakes. did i describe this semi-decently? can someone point me in the right direction? i'm more afraid of what this will cost me if it is the rotors.

Is this with or without the brake pedal pushed down? You said it happens more in reverse so I would think you probably have for foot on the brake a little when backing up but I'm not sure unless I ask, could just be your brake pads worn completely down. Might be a problem with the piston in the caliper locking up. If it was the brake pads when you install another set make sure they have warning strips on them so you will hear when it is time to change them again, I think more than likely it is your brake pads have worn down to the metal and if you have driven it enough like that or continue to you will need new rotors. By the way it was the one of the front wheels right? I don't think you mentioned that either.

thanks for replying so quickly. the noise happens when i'm driving like normal. applying the brake doesn't have any effect on the amount of noise. i've tested that theory already. and i'm not sure which tire the noise is coming from. i can't really get out and listen to it while i'm driving. that'd be a little dangerous.

Your just going to have to loosen your lugnuts on one side, jack it up, take the nuts off and take the tire off, look, see what you see, then do the same on the other side, that's about the best advice I can give.

Another possible source of the noise is U-joint on the driveshaft. I had a bad U-joint but thougth the noise came from a wheel.
