Power of attorney question

Hi Guys,

So I'm coming to the US in October for about 6 months to do a ski season in South Lake Tahoe. One option is for me to buy the car in California, get my own insurance etc, but this is quite an expensive option.

Seems that it would be better if I get a car in North Carolina where I have a close family friend. If I buy it there and register it to him, he can insure it and I am guessing this will be cheaper! NC sales tax is also lower. Also means I get to do a fun road-trip across the country.

However, I want to sell the car in California at the end of my ski season. How do I get a power of attorney from him to sell the car? Do I need a North Carolina Power of Attorney form or a Californian one?

Thanks,

Sam

Re: Power of attorney question

Welcome to AF!
My first thoughts would be to get a North Carolina POA as that is where the family friend resides. I would think that the POA would cover him selling the vehicle in CA. You might be able to word the POA in a way that allows him to sell it in any state. Your best bet would be (for your protection) is to have a POA drawn up by an attorney so it's legal and can give your wishes on paper the way you want it to be and it's legal and binding. There probably is lawyers in your friend's area that can counsel you for free (first session) about this matter.
