Angry 94 ranger rolls over but wont start-coils are new

The truck has sit up for 1 1/2 years. I did a tune up including coils, wires, plugs, filters, and new battery. It rolls over but I cant get it to start. I have spark on the exhaust side but not the intake side. The coils are good. It was running when it was parked. Any suggestions?

Make sure that you have voltage on all of the coils. Should be 12 volts on the Red/Lt Green wire going to the coils with the ignition on. If you have voltage going to all of them and seeing how you are getting spark on the exhaust side I would suspect the DIS ignition module.

Re: 94 ranger rolls over but wont start-coils are new

Update- I checked the plug for the coil on the intake side. I am getting twelve volts. I tried a quick spray of quick start just to see if that would help any being that the truck sat up for so long. It didn't help at all. What I ended up doing was buring the starter up. But it's kind of odd, because I didn't hold it for long. So, I am going to change the starter and try again. But I have to go offshore tonight, so I won't be able to try it for two weeks. Is it possible that there is some spark on the intake side, but not enough to register on the test light?

Re: 94 ranger rolls over but wont start-coils are new

Like I mentioned you probably need a new ignition module, I don't have my manual out now so I can't tell you which color wires but other wires going to the coil are supposed to get a negative ground pulse from the ignition module which is why I told you that was probably the problem seeing how we know the crank sensor is good b/c you are getting spark on the other side. And you've already checked for voltage going to the coil and know it's there. And you say it's a new coil. You could swap the two coils out though to make sure. I'll try to look at my book again later and see if I can find anything else to add.

Re: 94 ranger rolls over but wont start-coils are new

I just installed a new starter, ICM, and EEC relay. Rolls over strong, but that is about it. The only other thing I can think of is to install a new EEC. Or junk it.

Re: 94 ranger rolls over but wont start-coils are new

Update: Now it is getting spark on both sides of the motor, but it still wont start. It rolls over fast enought to where it seams like it is about to start, but it never does.

Do you have pressure on the fuel rail? If it sat for a year and a half you might have clogged injectors, a dead fuel pump, gummed up lines, etc. Ever see a lawnmower's carb if it sat for a few months with fuel in the tank? Check for pressure at the fuel rail, if you have that check to see if the injectors are clogged.

Yes I have pressure on the fuel rail. I just put it back on the other day. The injectors are all activating properly. Today, I just checked the timing. The timing is good. The only other option I can think of is the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Re: 94 ranger rolls over but wont start-coils are new

The MAF might be faulty, might be gummed up. I don't know if the 94 has any issues with it, but a bottle of MAF cleaner spray might do the job. It smoothed my 90 out a bit when I used it -- also a 2.3 -- but since it's cheaper than replacing the unit, give it a shot. If it works, you saved yourself a bundle, if it doesn't then you're only out a few bucks, right? Check to make sure the butterfly/throttle cable move freely if you haven't already, and to see if the butterfly is gummed up.

About the only other thing I can think of, unlikely though it issince it's a truck and higher off the ground, is a mechanic I know that rebuilt a 74 Nova and had it parked for a month waiting on some part for it to arrive. Well, when he tried to fire it up to move it it sputtered and wouldn't catch -- a mouse had built a nest in the exhaust system. Did you check the exhaust system to make sure it's not plugged up?

You should be able to disconnect the air nozzle and spray some starting fluid as somebody else is trying to start. If it starts its a fuel problem.
