94 Toyota pick up timing chain, need info on how to replace guides!

I have a 94 toyota p/u and I just sent my head to a machine shop to get it worked on and noticed that my timing guide is broke. How would I go about changing that? It goes around a bolt that is about halfway down the timing chain. I have been told to put a whole new timing set on there since it has 170K miles. And can you tell me how much of a pain it is going to be?

At 170K you should be putting on your second new TC set, and with the head off you're part way there (not that you have to pull the head to do the TC.) And while you're at it, the water and oil pumps, while everything is torn apart.

Here is the best How-To there is for a TC R&R.

You might as well plan on replacing the timing set and cover. I just replaced mine last year(about the same mileage) and when I had the timing cover off I noticed the chain had just about wore through the cover in the area of the water pump- that would not have been good mixing antifreeze with oil.

There is a place online that sells metal chain guides and a few ebay sellers that have timing sets, anything from just gears, chains and guides to covers, oil pump, water pump and gaskets.

You probably should drop the oil pan to get that plastic piece out
