starting to hate my new car...

Just bought this thing and all these little things are starting to add up to a big headache. Does anyone know why just the drivers side door will not lock or unlock from the number pad on the door or the lock/unlock buttons inside?

Re: starting to hate my new car...

What year is your Explorer? Does the driver's door lock/unlock with the keyless remote fob, or could the problem be the door lock solenoid? Does the key work so you know the lock mechanism is not seized up?

97 yes the key works. It did not come with the remote for the door. It does not lock or unlock from the key pad on the door but the other doors do. Where is the door lock solenoid, and is it easy enough for me to do?

Re: starting to hate my new car...

I agree it should be the door lock solenoid, and them things can be hard to get to on some vehicles, just like trying to change out a power window motor or window track, hard to get your hands in on some spots, most of the time those components are pop riveted in and you need to drill them out. Probably easier to get a pop rivet gun to put them back in. But I have managed to squeeze my arm and fingers behind some of those things holding a bolt with two fingers and pushing through the holes but can be difficult. Patience is key when working on tedious stuff like that.

The lock solenoid is the geared motor that actuates the power door locks. As ctwright indicated, they can be a bit tricky to change out. But, as with pretty much any automotive repairs, whether or not the repair will be easy enough for you depends on your skills. Only you can make that determination.

Re: starting to hate my new car...

im pretty useless, so i think i will have to deal with it until i can pay to get it done. i found a diagram of what i need to replace and there is no chance of me being able to work inside the door with my fat hands and not knowing what im doing. thanks both of you for your advice.
