1994 Yota top end noise

I just bought a 1994 toyota pickup standard cab 4x4 5 speed with a 22re... the kid i got it from said he was driving down the road and the motor lost power then died... he thought it was the battery so he put a new one it... it didnt fix it... he changed the plugs bc it was running rough... it didnt change anything... so he sold it to me... when i went to look at it my first though was that it had jumped time...

The motor was running very rough... jumping around a bit... and the exhaust was sputtering pretty good... the lifters where ticking hard...

Once i got it home i pulled the cap and rotor out... the back edge of the rotor was a lil burnt and you could tell it was the original... after changing those the motor smoothed out a lil bit but its still ticking... im going to check the timing this weekend but i have never really messed with Toyota's so im not sure the ins and outs of the motors...

Any pointers... advice... anyone eles had this problem before...

The odometer says 134k but the title says 166k... idk which but that might help...

Check your timing to make sure it hasn't jumped. The Timing Chain is good for 90-110K mi, then the slack can wear a hole in the TC cover, as well as possibly jump a tooth.

Adjust the valves, should quite them down some, but the valve train on the 22R is always a bit noisey.
