Exclamation 96 Nissan Maxima -My poor Baby

So i was driving home tonight and i looked down to see that at 70 mph my car was doing over 7000 r/pm!!! Help please?? At 40 mph she was doing 5000... I nursed her home and got her parked but now its 330 in the a.m and i cant sleep knowing something is wrong. Could it be because she needs oil or??

Re: 96 Nissan Maxima -My poor Baby

sounds like your transmission isnt shifting into some of the tops gears.

possible not locking up the torque converter for any number of problems.

Not an expert just giving you some ideas of what may be wrong.

Then again those are some pretty bad scenarios it could be as simple as low on fluid

it would also be helpful to list more information about your car such as:
-How many miles are on it
-if the check engine light is on
-If it is automatic or manual transmission
-If you have noticed any other symptoms while driving recently.

Re: 96 Nissan Maxima -My poor Baby

Alright, sorry about the lack of info. Its an automatic with almost 100 k on it. I checked the fluid this morning and its really really low. SO i am going to go get some transmission fluid and see what she does.

Re: 96 Nissan Maxima -My poor Baby

does the fluid smell burnt? if so your most likely looking at a transmission rebuild or a new transmission.

When was the last time (if ever) you had the filter and fluid changed in your transmission?

I believe but im not 100% sure your car takes a special type of fluid so you may want to check with your local autozone or other parts store on what to add they should be able to help you get the correct fluid and also may have some advice on what may be wrong with your car.

Either way you can surely try topping off the fluid even if it smells burnt and if it works i highly recommend getting a fluid and filter change on your transmission if adding fluid helps.
