Vanishing lines are not heading to the same focal points. Did you draw any quick thumbnail sketches to get the general shape figured out? Even just using box/circle shapes. Strongily reconmmend trying that before jumping into a more detailed design. Lemorris' current "VW Gig" thread shows this process, you'll see a very rough sketch to determine proportions and perspective, then he steps up to a more detailed sketch. There may be several before settling on a final version. Don't have the time now to show what all I mean by this, but will post something tomorrow unless somebody else takes the lead for you. Your off to a good start, just keep moving the pencil. twiztiddrms 02-11-2009, 11:20 PM nah i didnt use any of the box and cylider roughs. i did check out lemorris work and do see what ur sayin. something thats never been explain'd to me and havent read bout in any of the books i have is do i make copies along the way or just go over with my kneading eraser what i dont want?? i'm gonna try re-doing it with the squares as a rough and go from there appriciate the help bro lemorris 02-11-2009, 11:42 PM I make copies by using my light table you can also use a simple light box to do the same thing. I take my rough sketch and scan it then blow it up some then print it. Then I tape a clean piece of paper over it and transfer the image using my light table. I try to work up areas and add a little more detail and just kind of flesh the drawing out. After I get all the way through I put my new transfer on the light table with a new clean piece of paper and transfer it again. I have transferred a piece 8 or more times and it's not uncommon to just transfer a wheel or transfer the body then move my paper down and transfer the wheels to lower the car. Through the repetitive transferring I also get a good sense of the cars shapes and stuff so when I'm inking or redrawing in Illustrator and or Photoshop, every line is very familiar to me as I have already drawn it however many times. If you don't have a light table you can buy some transfer paper or just use charcoal on the back of your rough drawing and put your clean paper underneath. Use a colored pencil and redraw your rough sketch, adding more detail and refinements. The method works the same. Try it...it's awesome. On a side note it looks like you have chosen a pretty intense piece to try to tackle after a 10 year break. My advice to you would be to not try to finish anything...just sketch...fill up a small sketch book both sides with random doodles. get your eyes and arms in line with one another. Put on some 60's samba music or old school funk and just relax...draw for no purpose other than to draw, no end result. Then go for the tough stuff. -Lemorris twiztiddrms 02-12-2009, 01:10 AM i would love to get me a light table, but funds dont allow for that. i'm thinkin i may build myself 1. think its the bruce blitz book i have from when i was a kid that has the actual instructions on how to go about building a small version of 1. i went back and did a block style of the truck and got a pic of it from a different view this time. its a 3/4 view from more of the top so i think it maybe a lil better off for me. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/twiztiddrms/art010.jpg and these are just some of the stuff i been messing with to get back into the swing of things http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/twiztiddrms/art007.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/twiztiddrms/art004.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/twiztiddrms/art002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/twiztiddrms/art003.jpg and yes i do know they aint automotive related its just to show what i been using as u can say practice and lemorris and blip thanx for the advice and any future advice its a great help lemorris 02-12-2009, 09:51 AM my light table is homemade, I've used it for 17 years. I bought the small ones for my wife and daughter for $25 each. this 10 x 12 is $36 http://www.dickblick.com/products/gagne-porta-trace-light-boxes-with-stainless-steel-frames/ not a bad investment, costs less than a video game. -lemorris Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
