toyota tacoma prerunner hood release cable is broken

Help. The hood release cable on our 2004 Toyota Tacoma prerunner has become disconnected from the latch. The hood is closed and cannot be opened. It appears the only way to accesss the hood release is to break something, either the grill, or the hood. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to open the hood? I have tried making a special tool to no avail, I think I need to remove the entire mechanism from the frame. If I try and fail the truck will be unsafe to drive. Any suggestions?

I haven't looked to be sure but I think you can access the release from under the truck using a long screwdriver or a long metal rod.
