2004 intrepid dies

My 2004 Dodge Intrepid will run just fine, then it just starts to lose power and dies. It acts just like it is running out of gas-but it is not. I wait 3-5 minutes and it will start, then it does one of 2 things. It will do the same thing again, or else it will run for days with no problem what so ever. No codes are coming up. It just started this a few days ago, and the repair shop has no idea what it is. He will just have to start weeding things out and replacing them. Any ideas???
Thanks for the help!!!

Can you here the fuel pump when it dies?
Best would be if you could hook up a fuel pressure gauge and observe what your fuel pressure does when engine dies. Fuel pimp could be heating up and failing and when cools down works again. Does the amount of gas in tank make a difference?

Which engine and when was the gas filter changed?

A faulty crankshaft and camshaft sensor do not always throw codes.

Does this happen when engine is to normal operating temp or does it do it at cold start up also?

Another thing you could try is warming up the coil with a hair dryer before starting cold engine to see if that has any affect?

What condition are the battery cables and ends. Possible corrision on cable ends.

Just some thoughts.

Re: 2004 intrepid dies

I have the 3.5 engine. It will do it after it gets normal temp. I will have to listen for the fuel pump next time. The amount of gas in tank doesn't seem to affect it happening.

Re: 2004 intrepid dies

Next time that happens if you can tap on the gas tank with a rubber mallet or 2x4 to see if it jars the fuel pump into running again. Possible that the fuel pump overheats and internally binds thus stopping the pump.

Re: 2004 intrepid dies

we replaced the cam sensor this weekend-didn't do any good. So, we are going to replace the crank sensor this weekend. I can hear the fuel pump running when this happenes.

Re: 2004 intrepid dies

OK GUYS I am going to relpace the o2sensors that are being read by engine light as being bad. Could they be the problem? Took car to dodge dealer Fri-they check it over with a fine tooth comb and ran all kinds of checks on it. Said the only thing bad are the sensors. What do you think??
