Question 2000 Dodge Intrepid Ignition Switch

When you put the key in the ignition it wont turn. We have to jiggle the key to get it to turn. It is not the steering wheel lock. When we start the car, the ABS, Brake and Airbag lights come on, the windows wont work and the heater does not work. I jiggled the key more and all these problems went away. Has anyone experienced this. I believe I have to replace the ignition switch but if there is a different issue I would appreciate some insight. Thanks

Re: 2000 Dodge Intrepid Ignition Switch

I have to same problem. A few years ago I had the ignition switch replaced because my key wouldnt work most of the time. Since then it seems like the key doesnt "sit right" in the ignition when I start it. I also have to move it slightly in order for things to work(windows, radio). But as of yesterday, now the key doesnt want to stay in the "run" position when I start it. It springs back to the "on" position which shuts the car off. It will start and if I turn the key back very slowly and gently let go of the key, it will stay in the "run" position, for now. Kinda dangerous tho, to be driving and the ignition slips back to "on" and the engine dies.

Yes, that is dangerous. Are you thinking of changing the ignition switch again? I looked online and see them for around $30. Is this something I can do myself?

I changed the ignition switch. I got a new one at Auto Zone for around $15.00 but that (it seems ) is not the problem. It seems that my problem is in the ignition bracket housing that the ignition switch itself fits into. Thats what seems to be letting the ignition switch kick back..Thats the part that I will probaly have to change(if I can figure out how to get that off) Right now my ignition will not stay in the run position when I pull the old ignition switch out therefore it will not let me line the new replacement switch up to put the new one in.
