"seems funny that I can get it back in gear by turning the engine off." Yup. That fact makes me lean towards something electrical though the main symptons don't point that way. Are you seeing a check engine light? Might try the key dance to check for any codes that may be stored.
What would I do? Besides checking for codes I would inspect every connection on any tranny associated sensor making sure they are clean and tight. Then I would drop the pan and make sure there's no metal debrie. If there is, it's time for a rebuild or new tranny. Change the fluid and filter while you're at it. Use only ATF-4 fluid. If there's no debrie, come on back.
A quicky - Disconnect the battery a few minutes.
