1995 Dodge Grand Caravan tranny

I was driving my van when I heard a couple clunk noises and then the engine would accerate but it wouldn't move. I pulled over and shut the engine off restarted it and put it in gear and the van moved about 500 feet and then no gears again. I again shut the engine off and on then put in gear and it moved about 100 feet and no gears again. I did this until I got the van off the freeway. After the tow home I started the engine again and moved the car out of the way. Any ideas what it might be seems funny that I can get it back in gear by turning the engine off.

"seems funny that I can get it back in gear by turning the engine off." Yup. That fact makes me lean towards something electrical though the main symptons don't point that way. Are you seeing a check engine light? Might try the key dance to check for any codes that may be stored.

What would I do? Besides checking for codes I would inspect every connection on any tranny associated sensor making sure they are clean and tight. Then I would drop the pan and make sure there's no metal debrie. If there is, it's time for a rebuild or new tranny. Change the fluid and filter while you're at it. Use only ATF-4 fluid. If there's no debrie, come on back.

A quicky - Disconnect the battery a few minutes.
