New Tamiya masking tape and a masking tutorial.

I'm using Tamiya's new 40mm wide masking tape to mask the window trim of this Revell Civic. As you can see this width tape works nicely for this job, one strip covers the whole area.:)
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/civictape1.JPG
After pressing the tape into the grooves around the windows and firmly up against the lower raised window trim, I trimmed around the area with an Exacto knife.
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/civictape2.JPG
I did the same for all windows and used the scrap trimmings to mask the rest of the car in conjunction with more unused tape.
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/civictape3.JPG
In this step I have air brushed black acrylic paint onto the exposed window trim areas. As a rule I use acrylic paints for window trim if the body has been painted with an oil based paint, and oil based enamel if it had been painted with an acrylic paint. This makes cleaning up edges easier because the paints are less likely to melt into each other.
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/civictape4.JPG
After I removed the tape some of the edges appeared a little uneven. Using a toothpick, I scraped around the jagged edges of the black paint to even it out, this doesn't hurt the orange paint on the body. Some very minor touch up with a brush fixed the trim to look satisfactory.
http://www.infinite1der.org/~dino/civictape5.JPG
Here is the completed trim work, I chose to leave the trim around the sun roof orange as I didn't want a big black square on the roof. This was accomplished in about 40 minutes. Next step is to accent the panel lines.

great job veyron, it would be better if u could use AF's server for pictures though.. they took forever to load and they'll probably disappear sooner or later rendering the thread useless :)

Very clean. Although you seem to have forgot to mask off the border of the sunroof.

Nice demonstration Veyron.
Is this new 40mm tape the same material as the narrower widths from Tamiya, or is it more like packing tape?

Thanks! It's more like the masking material provided in Tamiya kits for window masking.:)

Great color on your civic. I must get some Tamiya masking tape cause I thought that the paint would bleed through like the masking tape I used from 3m so I stopped using it. Thanks for the information.

Veyron,
Where did you get that green mat on you work surface?
Right now I have a piece of glass painted white, but I like the markings on that mat. :bigthumb:
Got another second with the Dino 246 GTS at the Downeastcon in Maine last w/e, and a 2nd with the CLK-GTR. :biggrin2:

this 40mm tape appears to be made by NICHIBAN.
i am an intern architect that builds models all day everyday, and can convey that the professional guys all swear by the NICHIBAN tape. apparently, it is super thin.
it is highly sought after, since there is no US distribution. however, if you want the same stuff, perhaps there are online outlets with the NICHIBAN tapes - you can get it in larger quantities too.
thanks for the tips!

Hey, as long as this is bumped...there's a new product in the US that's essentially the same as Tamiya tape, but available in "household" widths that standard household masking tape comes in. It's so nice to be able to be wasteful with a product this good :sunglasse
It is called Shurtape Gold.
Here's the thread (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t942145.html)

Nice tutorial, thanks! I'm a huge Tamiya fan, but I like 3M Scotch "Delicate Surface" masking tape. Just like the Tamiya, it makes a nice, clean line and doesn't bleed if you burnish the edges.
And it's a LOT cheaper.
