Importing a German VW to the US

I am considering the purchase of a 2003 California Coach Freestyle Volkswagon Eurvan. This vehicle has a 2.5L Diesel engine (75kw/102 PS). I'd post more information, but it is all in German and I don't speak German.

In approximately 1 year, I will return to the United States and I would like to bring the van home.

Does anyone have a guess at what cost are associated with getting it drivable in the US? I am figuring on about $1,000 dollars for transport. Are there any other requirements like changing brakes, bumpers, lights, etc.?

Thanks

You need to prove the car meets US DOT and EPA regulations, if it doesn't sayes so on the car, you would have to contact VWoA and ask them if it does. If it does, most new cars do, have them send you a letter saying the vehicle meets these standards.
When you bring the car to the US, you have to pay a fee of 2.5% of the market value or the price you payed to customs. They should give you a form you have to show the DMV. That should be it.
Anyway, call VWoA.

If the Eurovan is classified as a truck, which I'm not sure it is, the tax would be 25% and not 2.5%.

Importing any newer vehicle into the US is nearly impossible unless the factory built it specifically for the US market. A Eurovan with a diesel engine has not been made to these requirements. Volkswagen hasn't certified that engine for sale in the US and especially hasn't certified that vehicle with that engine in the US.

About the only way you can import the vehicle is through the "Show and Display" loophole in the federal requirements. I highly doubt that this particular vehicle could qualify.

If you could find a way to import it, it would probably make more financial sense to sell it and buy something in the US...no matter how much you like this vehicle.
