Re: code readers
What is your budget and what do you expect it to do?
The lowest priced ones will read a code and turn off the check engine light.
The better ones will give you more detailed info, live data, some will graph and do enhanced codes, not just generic.
The best ones will cover most functions of any computer in the car, including ABS, transmission, transfer case, etc.
Prices vary greatly, so it all depends on your budget and what you expect from it. I would opt to get something better then just a basic code reader and expect to spend in the $250+ range to get something in the mid range. Unless you have a few grand to spend, then I would look at Snap-on or Mac and get a good unit. I have an autoXray 6000 that is ok, covers generic and enhanced, cam, as well as some OBD I. It does everything it is supposed to do, but when I have the cash I will upgrade to something that will do more systems, such as ABS.
